The victims’ names: Natalie Brooks, 12; Paige Herring, 12; Stephanie Johnson, 12; Brittney Varner, 11; and Shannon Wright, 32. March 24th 1998 they were shot to death by an 11 year old and 13 year old fellow students.

Shannon Wright was killed protecting a wounded student.
She is referenced as the 'hero' but this song is really about all of them,

It also touches on the sad legacy the 2 perpetrators, whose names DO NOT DESERVE mentioning, themselves children, inflicted on the world, and themselves.
