The sound of quiet footsteps on the cobblestones is heard throughout the winding streets,
With steady measured tread her eyes look straight ahead she must not let go her defense.
Although she seems to look not to the left or right she’s sure she knows the way to go.
She’s been that way a thousand times before, her lover’s waiting by the door.
They talk of nonsense, dreaming as they fall, of happy days not soon to come
For fear of death is worn like a shawl, for war has broken out for some
Her only comfort is his quiet face, his only joy is when she smiles
They hold each other in their tight embrace, they pray it’s only for a while…

to think about her, she helps dispel the gloom
